Why are soap operas a taboo for Germans?

I've never heard this. In fact, when I was young, the evening/ prime-time serial dramas, like Dallas and Dynasty, etc., were very popular in Germany. If you're talking about day-time soap operas, I can only assume they are taboo because Germans are hard-working and extremely "unwasteful" (sorry if that's not a real word!), and I can hardly think of any greater waste of time than soap operas. But, actually, my German grandmother used to watch "As The World Turns" every weekday!!! LOL. But that was 40 years ago... And, maybe because she was living in the USA!
